KANYAKUMARI: A 21-year-old engineering student, who was involved in three snatching incidents in the district over the last few weeks, was arrested and lodged in jail by the Kanyakumari district police on Saturday. The student was involved in the crime to mobilise money for playing ‘online rummy.’
The accused — J Justin Raj of Eethavilai in Mekkamandapam in the district was detained at a vehicle check on Friday. He is the son of a daily wage worker.
Inquiries by the police revealed that he was into gambling for nearly two years.
A police officer said that Justin made a few small gains while he just started to play and that got him addicted to it.
“Gradually he started losing and incurred a loss of a few lakhs. As he was addicted, he started stealing money from his own house and later resorted to selling home appliances from his house,” the police officer said.
Justin’s family member claimed that he pledged 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery to invest money in the game and that they are struggling to repay the loans and recover the jewellery.
His thefts at home affected his relationship with his dear ones. Realising that he cannot generate money from home he resorted to chain snatching. Along with his accomplice, he snatched chains of three women at Karungal, Thiruvattar and Eraniel.
Justin’s addition not only affected him financially and personally but also his studies as he has many arrears and is now struggling to clear them.
The Karungal police recovered three gold chains weighing 10 sovereigns in total that he snatched from the three women and his bike before producing him before the court and lodged him in jail. The police are on a lookout for his accomplice.
